Canal Office & Canal Bridge Historic Canal Marker Dedication
The Town of Mamakating will host a dedication for two new historic transportation canal markers in the village of Wurtsboro, N.Y. One marker commemorates the former canal office on Sullivan Street and the other for the site of the bridge that once carried traffic over the D&H Canal. The bridge was removed after the canal closed in 1898. Both of the canal markers are among the first ones produced and installed through the Historic Transportation Canals Marker Grant Program.
The unveiling ceremony will take place beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 12. The dedication coincides with the 194th anniversary of the D&H Canal’s groundbreaking, which was on July 13, 1825. The local business community hosts a founders’ day celebration each year on July 13.
