From April to December of 1918, what is today recognized as Genesee Valley Park and Genesee Valley Golf Course once served as Baker Field, where the U.S. Army School of Aerial Photography trained aerial photographers for World War I. This was one of the first large scale conflicts in which airplanes and aerial photography were used as a tool for gathering intelligence on the enemy. Named after a farming family who donated the land to the City of Rochester in 1908, Baker Field became one of the first training camps for aerial photography.
