In 1888, the Boonville Fair Association was incorporated. That September, they held their inaugural fair on the grounds of what was then the Boonville driving or trotting park, a local horse racetrack. Prior to the start of the fair, new buildings, including barns and a grandstand, were erected on the grounds. The fair was held from September 11 to 14, and among the festivities were music, parades, agricultural exhibits of farm animals and products, and contests, including a musical competition and horse races.

The Boonville Fair continued to be an annual tradition. The 1918 fair saw a special visitor. Former President William Howard Taft attended the fair on September 18, 1918, delivering the annual address. Over its history, other notable visits to the fair have included politicians and New York State Governors, and the famous country music star Dolly Parton paid a visit in 1974, putting on a concert for fair attendees.

As of 2024, the Boonville Fair continues to be held each year in the same location in celebration of rural agricultural life and community.
