Historically, taverns played an important role in the development of communities as a meeting place for local residents or to serve travelers by providing lodging, food, and spirits. Joseph Bramhall was one of the earliest residents in the Meredith community, arriving around 1790. He established a tavern, known as Bramhall’s Tavern, which operated at this site from 1797 until 1802.  Aside from Joseph Bramhall and a handful of residents, the Town of Meredith, was sparsely populated. However, Bramhall’s Tavern was in an ideal location, situated alongside a state road and main route frequented by travelers. The tavern thrived and remained in operation for several years.

As of 2021, the house located on the site is believed by some to still contain a central part constructed by Bramhall himself.
