In 1824, Young married Miriam Works and in 1825 their daughter Elizabeth was born in Port Byron. During his time here, Young worked as a painter on the Erie Canal, painting canal lock houses and bridges. By 1832, Young resided in Mendon, Monroe County, New York, where he converted to the Mormon faith and was baptized.
