WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2022

At a meeting of the New Canaan Society on September 25, 1828, the members voted to “Remove and Rebuild the Meeting House on the west side of the Road within fifteen Rods of a Pine Tree Standing in R. Janes Lot [sic].” Although secondary sources from 1829 mention construction plans, the congregation’s new church is not referenced again in primary sources until the 1834 deed. On January 15, 1834, James and Rebecca Warner and John E. and Sarah Warner sold “that piece of land (on which a meeting house is now erected)…” to the trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of Canaan for $50. The church was later renamed the Canaan Center Presbyterian Church.

As the congregation numbers steeply declined, the remaining members and others established the Canaan Historical Society in 1962 to help preserve the church building. Following the Society’s incorporation in 1963, the Presbytery of Albany conveyed the church to the Canaan Historical Society for $1.00. As of 2022, the former church remained the home of the Canaan Historical Society.
