Jerome Holland, All-American college football player for Cornell University (1937-1938), lived in a home on this site with his parents. Holland, known as Brud, was afterward an educator and civil rights advocate. He served as President of Delaware State College (1953-1959) and the Hampton Institute (1960-1970), and is believed to have been the first African American appointed to the New York Stock Exchange Board of Directors. He was appointed to the position of Ambassador to Sweden (1970-1972) by President Richard M. Nixon.
