In 1903, Harriet Josephine Terry graduated from Cornwall-on-Hudson High School. She later attended Howard University in Washington, DC, considered by many to be the top historically Black college in the country. While at Howard, Harriet excelled in the liberal arts. She became involved with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority during her sophomore year and eventually served as treasurer in 1908 and president in 1909. Harriet went on to become an English teacher, working for over 30 years at Alabama A&M University before her retirement.
