John Irving (1836-1913) was born and lived for many years in Union Springs, NY. He worked as a stonemason, carving stone for Cornell University buildings and the former Cornell Library building at the corner of Tioga and Seneca Streets in Ithaca. His obituary published in the Ithaca Daily News on September 24, 1913, claimed he carved the first stone of Morrill Hall, the first Cornell University building. In addition to his work as a stonemason, Irving was a master schooner for a number of years.
