This will be the first and possible only Lafayette marker in the state. Lafayette’s overnight stay off Carondelet on April 28, 1825, prior to the formal reception in St. Louis would be commemorated with this marker. Lafayette was accompanied on the Steamboat Natchez by the committee from Louisiana. They anchored at the village of Carondelet and sent a messenger to the Gov. Clark of that Lafayette would arrive in St. Louis the next day. Gov. Clark and Gov. Coles of Illinois met Lafayette at the steamboat the following day, then proceeded upriver to the city. At 9 AM, they landed at the market house square and a national salute was fired. Lafayette rode into the city in a four-horse carriage at the head of a parade. A reception was given where anyone was welcome to come and greet him. He then attended an evening ball. Lafayette departed the following morning on the Natchez heading back east.
