On January 22, 1901, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) depot in Lindenhurst, NY was destroyed by an early morning fire. Work on a new passenger depot located on the site of the old one began not long after the fire, and the new structure was completed and opened on March 23, 1901.
The Lindenhurst LIRR depot served the community until it was replaced when the LIRR elevated its tracks in the late 1960s. The rail elevation plan was underway in Lindenhurst by November 1967, at which time the old depot was given to the Lindenhurst Historical Society by the LIRR (Lindenhurst Beacon, November 2, 1967).
The following year, the former depot was moved to Irmisch Park, and the Lindenhurst Historical Society began restoring the depot for use as a museum. As of 2024, the restored depot still stands in the park, alongside a former freight house, a ca. 1958 refurbished caboose, and the Old Village Hall Museum, Lindenhurst’s original village hall building.
