From 1908-1918 this was the summer home of former school teacher, philanthropist, and woman’s rights advocate, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage. She married wealthy railroad tycoon and former politician Russell Sage. After his death in 1906 she inherited his vast fortune. Passionate about education, and woman’s rights, she dedicated her life and fortune to provide opportunities for those less fortunate by creating Russell Sage College, a college for women, and the Russell Sage Foundation.
