Emma Hale met Joseph Smith when Smith and his father arrived in town to work for Josiah Stowell, an acquaintance of the Hales. During the two years he worked in the area, Joseph repeatedly asked Isaac Hale for permission to marry Emma, but was refused. At age 22, Emma Hale married 21 year old Joseph Smith on January 18, 1827 at the home of Justice Zechariah Tarble against her father’s wishes. The Tarble home once stood on this site.
