BY SCHUYLKILL NAVIGATION CO.
FOR 108-MI. COAL-CARRYING
SLACKWATER CANAL SYSTEM,
PORT CARBON TO PHILADELPHIA.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2024

Located in Port Clinton Borough Park are the remnants of a lock used on the 108-mile canal between Port Carbon and Philadelphia. Built by the Schuylkill Navigation Company in 1820, the Port Clinton lock played an important role in the slackwater-canal system, which allowed for the shipment of coal from Port Carbon to Philadelphia. The lift lock was located at the base of the outlet of the Blue Mountain dam.

In 1846, the lock was enlarged, at which point it was renumbered as “Lock No.27.”

Visitors to the park can view the enlarged lock from the site of the historical marker.
