WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2021

The earliest gravestones in this cemetery date from ca. 1830. The land was deeded for use as a cemetery in 1848. In the 1850s and 1860s it was located across the street from the Brooks family farm, from which it took its name. In the later part of the nineteenth century, it began to be called Shaeffer Cemetery. At least four Civil War veterans are buried here, including Private William Whertman, who enlisted in 1863 with the 122nd Infantry in Lockport.
