Tompkins Harrison Matteson (1813-1884) was a noted 19th century historical artist who painted famous scenes from American history. His more notable works include “The Spirit of 76” and “George Washington at Valley Forge.” Matteson passed away on February 2, 1884 in Sherburne, NY. He was buried in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany’s cemetery.
