VOTES FOR WOMEN
SUFFRAGISTS HELEN HURLBUT OF
CALIFORNIA & ELIZABETH UPHAM
YATES OF MAINE SPOKE HERE, THE
FORMER JANSSEN’S HALL, FOR THE
1896 SUFFRAGE CAMPAIGN.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2022

In 1896, suffragists campaigned for an amendment to the state constitution of California that would secure women’s right to vote in the state. The National America Woman Suffrage Association saw this as a crucial component in their fight for women’s suffrage and sent national organizers to the state to help these efforts. This included Elizabeth Upham Yates (1857-1942) of Maine, an experienced traveler and lecturer for women’s suffrage. Both Yates and Californian suffragist Helen Hurlbut (1830-1900) spoke in favor of suffrage during the 1896 campaign in Janssen’s Hall in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California.

The California State Legislature did vote in favor of placing a women’s suffrage amendment before the voters of the state that year. However, despite the campaign efforts of the suffragists, the measure failed. California women finally did secure the right to vote after a 1911 referendum, when voters of the state passed a measure for women’s suffrage.
