EQUALITY CLUB, WHICH MET HERE,
WAS RENAMED FOR HER IN 1901.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2022

Once known as the Woman’s Equality Club of Wyoming, in 1901 the organization changed its name to the Susan Look Avery Club in honor of Susan Look Avery, an advocate for women’s suffrage and racial justice with ties to the Wyoming, New York community. Though Avery is perhaps most noted for her suffrage and anti-slavery activity in Louisville, Kentucky, Avery maintained a summer home in Wyoming, New York and played an important role in heling establish an activist community in the region.

The Political Equality Club in Wyoming traces its origin back to a conference held in 1891 in nearby Warsaw, New York, when Ella Hawley Crossett, an advocate for women’s suffrage, helped create a local Political Equality Club in Warsaw. The following year the Woman’s Equality Club of Wyoming was established with support from Avery, who was already a noted speaker and writer in favor of women’s suffrage.

Following the passing and ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Susan Look Avery Club continued to stay involved within the Wyoming community, turning its focus community work and support. As of 2022, the Club still exists and operates within the Wyoming Community as a social club. The marker is located at the Village Hall of Wyoming, where meetings by the organization were historically held.
