Wakeman Cemetery was established as a burying ground for the Wakeman family. In 1808, Eliphalet Wakeman purchased 150 ¾ acres of land in the Walton Patent from Jacob Walton. Eliphalet and his wife, Eunice, settled here by 1810, and the family continued to farm the land for nearly 100 years. The current deed acknowledges the cemetery, “Excepting and reserving therefrom, the use for the heirs of Eliphalet Wakeman, Sr., the burying ground on said premises, as now enclosed and used together with the right of way thereto from the public highway as now used.” The burials are surrounded by a distinctive stone slab fence. Each stone measures approximately 4 inches thick, 4 feet long, and 4 feet high, with some stones more than 8 feet long.
At least three generations of the Wakeman family are buried here. The first known burial was that of Henry Wakeman in 1835 and the last burial was that of his brother, Jesse Wakeman, in 1906. Marinda and Frederick Krug were originally buried in the Wakeman Cemetery; however, they were later reinterred at the Walton Cemetery. The footstone of Marinda Krug, marked with her initials, still remains in the Wakeman Cemetery. There are also three possible unknown burials, which have unmarked stones.
