In 1849 the Utica-Burlington Plank Road was chartered. The following year, in 1850 the route was extended 26 miles from Utica to West Winfield, where it crossed the Great Western Turnpike. This intersection was largely undeveloped in 1829 but rapidly grew to a sizable village by 1859. The Village of West Winfield was officially formed in 1898.
